The main topic discussed in the event I will host in a few days is the fundamentals of the Radar Intercept Officer role in DCS. I will be using the F-14B(U) to show examples in-game.
Given the size of the topic and the fact that I want it to be applicable across every Tomcat, the focus of this session leans towards situational Awareness and Air-to-Air.
The event is “open mic”, so viewers can ask questions at any point of the session.
The stream will be split into two parts:
- A brief introduction to the aim of the event, the F-14 Tomcat, Situational Awareness, the RIO role in DCS, and so on.
- Then, we will move to in-game scenarios. Depending on the requests from the viewers, I may indulge in a quick deep-dive into intercept geometry. At the end of the day, RIO stands for Radar Intercept Officer. The ability to correlate a picture, the avionics, and understand how the situation will evolve in the near future is paramount. And also surprisingly easy!
Now to the technical side. I am not a streamer, so I had to figure out a couple of things. I decided to stream on YouTube set to very-low latency. Unfortunately, this mode does not support 1440p, so I had to downscale my native resolution to 1080p. The delay is circa 5 seconds, so not great, not terrible. Voice-wise, I will use Discord because you can’t have a conversation with such a delay; it would be intolerable.
Lastly, if there are Italian speakers here and there is enough interest, I can schedule a similar event in Italian. Please let me know if you like the idea.
