“Stop Destroying Videogames” – European Parliament hearing

The Stop Destroying Videogames initiative finally landed at the European Parliament. This is the hearing held on 16/04/2026.

The Stop Destroying Videogames initiative is something I have not mentioned on this website yet. Last year, they managed to collect 1,294,188 signatures of European citizens, mine included, with a rather simple purpose: to prevent software houses from removing games from players’ libraries, blocking access entirely, and similar means of de facto destroying games bought by the players.

The following is the heading held at the European Parliament. It is worth listening to, in my opinion. I found hearing the exchanges and presentation quite refreshing, given the current political situation, especially abroad.

If you think this matter does not touch you, well, you are quite wrong: taking away something you paid for at the whim of the publisher should be illegal. Today is video games, tomorrow might well be something else.
Just because a good is digital, so all it takes is a click rather than entering everyone’s houses and grabbing physical copies, it does not mean it should be tolerated. Hyperbole here, but I hope you see my point.

More information about the Stop Destroying Videogames citizen initiative can be found in the dedicated EU website.
