Back in mid 2016, a post in the DCS Mods section of Eagle Dynamics’ forum announced the development of the Aermacchi MB-339 by Frecce Tricolori Virtuali, trainer and light attack aircraft. A couple years later, it was released but the work has not stopped.
Tomorrow 24th of July the development team is releasing a new version, featuring plenty of updates and improvements.
From what I have seen so far, they are really pushing the limits of what can be implemented without ED’s SDK! Speaking of which, I asked a friend of mine who is part of the MB-339 development team, what is the relation between ED and the modding community and if they provided any help or material. ED unfortunately does not provide any support to modders.
They started by using the Flight Model template located in the installation folder:
We found out how to do everything on our own. We applied the traditional engineering concepts in order to create a flight simulator. In other words, we calculated forces and moments by means of equations and concepts of the standard flight mechanics applied to a rigid body.
Aircraft systems have been created separately in a linked library embedded into the DLL.
I wish ED would provide additional material and documentation to this team. They have worked very hard and the quality of their MB-339 speaks for itself.
